DA-TT meeting – May 2023 (Rome)
The Data Assimilation-Task Team (DA-TT) fosters the development and evaluation of data assimilation systems relevant to OceanPredict to support the coordination of the fundamental and challenging issues in the ocean forecasting process, of which data assimilation is a significant part.
The meeting aims to bring together experts in the field of ocean and coupled data assimilation (DA) to discuss the latest progress and challenges in the field, and to share experiences in the development of ocean/coupled data assimilation from the underlying algorithms to the details of implementation in operational forecasting systems. Overarching topics of discussion include:
- How to improve integration of ocean DA developments in operational forecasts and demonstrate the impacts on ocean and coupled forecasts.
- How to contribute to the UN Decade for Ocean Science. Examples include the role of DA in digital twins, ocean best practices, and the evaluation and design of ocean observing systems. Should the DA-TT organise its own contribution to the UN Decade?
- How to link better with the WMO community and other external groups. Examples include the input of ocean observation requirements to WMO, links to the DAOS working group, and links to the ISDA.

The workshop will be structured around the following themes:
- Advances in DA methods (ensembles, algorithms, machine learning, downscaling, …)
- Error covariance modelling (B, Q and R, hybrid approaches)
- Observing systems: requirements, evaluation, design and associated DA developments
- Software infrastructure and efficient use of DA on HPCs
- Coupled Earth system DA (e.g., ocean/atmosphere/sea-ice, physics/biogeochemistry, physics/acoustics)
- Applications of DA in operational forecasting, reanalysis systems, digital twins and climate prediction.
Abstracts that address any of the following topics will be particularly welcomed:
- Data assimilation developments for global, regional and coastal systems
- Ensembles methods: their generation, assessment, and use in data assimilation
- Algorithm development in support of data assimilation
- Hybrid data assimilation methods
- Coupled earth system data assimilation
- Use of novel observations and improved use of existing observations
- Model error
- Forecast error covariance estimation and representation in DA
- Correlated observation errors.
- Application of machine learning to DA
- DA software infrastructure

Registration and abstract submission for the DA-TT meeting are both done through the form below. If you only want to register but not submit an abstract, just leave the respective submission form part blank.
We do not expect to charge a registration fee and costs for breaks and lunch will be kindly covered by the meeting host CNR. We plan to have a workshop dinner which will be paid for by participants.

The meeting is primarily intended for participation by DA-TT members, the wider OceanPredict community and other experts in ocean and coupled DA, machine learning, ocean forecasting and reanalysis. Junior scientists and graduate students are also encouraged to attend.

The workshop will be held at the CNR headquarters in central Rome (piazzale Aldo Moro, see more information at https://www.cnr.it/en/reach-headquarters ; location visible at https://www.google.com/maps/place/Piazzale+Aldo+Moro,+00185+Roma+RM). CNR headquarters are close to the main University campus (“La Sapienza”), not far from the main railway station “Roma Termini” and the student neighborhood San Lorenzo.
There are plenty of options for accommodation nearby. Lunches are expected to be offered by the local organizers, while dinner is at everyone’s expense.
Dinner information
We have reserved a restaurant called Pancrazio (https://www.ristorantepancrazio.it/) on day 2 of the meeting, 10 May 2023. The restaurant is located in the centre of Rome, a few steps from Campo de’ Fiori, on the remains of the Theater of Pompey. We negotiated a per person cost of 55 Euros for the dinner (3-course meal, drinks included, self-pay at restaurant). The first course and dessert are non-meat based, while the main course would be meat, which can be replaced with a vegetarian alternative if wanted. We will collect numbers of how many will take part in the dinner on day 1 of the meeting (9 May 2023).
