Understanding our oceans
Ocean knowledge is gathered through ocean monitoring & observation, ocean analysis & prediction, production and use of ocean information and user feedback, and allows us to better understand ocean, weather, and environmental hazards, as well as climate change impacts and variability. Such ocean information is essential to supporting and guiding decisions on the pathway to sustainable development.
As an international programme and science network, OceanPredict enables broad collaboration in various ocean science areas, including improving the ocean prediction capacity of the future.
OceanPredict engages with national, international and intergovernmental partners to strengthen engagement with ocean science community, to co-design and co-develop ocean prediction and ocean observing systems, and to increase the societal impact of improved ocean prediction. This is achieved through dedicated task teams, close collaboration with the national ocean forecasting centres and contributions to relevant international projects and programmes.
OceanPredict fosters the development and improvement of operational ocean analysis and forecasting systems worldwide. The best ocean descriptions come from approaches that blend models and observations. OceanPredict systems range from local, regional basin-scale to global coverage and from low to eddy-resolving resolution. Forecast products are available through web services.
Task Team activities
OceanPredict (OP) contributes to the development of new science capabilities through active working groups, called the OP Task Teams (or TTs). These teams focus on relevant science topics (listed below) which are important to OceanPredict and the wider ocean science community. This OP effort is underpinned by interaction with international research programmes and expert science groups
The OceanPredict framework operates as a science forum and activity platform providing expertise, opportunities for collaboration, and advocacy to its members and partners. OceanPredict is involved in various science projects providing scientific and technical expertise, and international communication and science coordination.
