Rachel Furner – AI-TT

Research scientist, Ocean modelling team, ECMWF

Rachel Furner works at ECMWF developing data-driven ocean models funded by the destination earth project, and leads the AI Task Team in Ocean Predict. She originally worked in physics-based modelling, beginning her career working at the UK Met Office developing the NEMO ocean model for coastal applications, before moving to machine learning. In 2024 Rachel completed a PhD on data-driven ocean modelling, emulating idealised ocean configurations with machine learning tools. With experience developing and using both numerical and data-driven models, she is interested in the way these tools complement each other, and can be used within operational prediction systems.

Rachel is the co-chair of the AI-TT.
