Pierre De Mey-Frémaux – COSS-TT
Senior Research Scientist at LEGOS/CNRS - FRANCE
I am a researcher. Since the beginning of my career, I have had the opportunity to participate in many ways in the scientific support of the development of operational oceanography, civil and military, national and international, offshore and coastal. I strongly believe that ocean forecasting is a science (Pinardi et al., 2017 gives an epistemological/historical perspective, which includes several of my contributions). The scientific approach is essential for operational forecasting, because it is a quality assurance. A scientific deficit is a major risk for an operational project.
Since 2006, throughout GODAE, OceanView and OceanPredict, I have been leading, then co-leading with Villy Kourafalou, the Coastal and Shelf Seas working group, to become the Coastal Oceans and Shelf Seas Task Team (OceanPredict COSS-TT). We hold International Coordination Meetings every approx. 18 months, covering all aspects from science to operational systems and applications in the regional and coastal oceans.
