Patrick Heimbach
Professor for Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin - USA
Patrick Heimbach has been a core member of the “Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean” (ECCO) consortium for nearly two decades, and represents this effort in OceanPredict. Supported by NASA, ECCO produces kinematically and dynamically self-consistent global decadal ocean and sea ice state estimates spanning the satellite altimetric record. Patrick’s ongoing work focuses on the development of methods embedded within ECCO’s 4DVar data assimilation system to provide comprehensive uncertainty estimates, and to develop an infrastructure for quantitative observing system design. These efforts align with OceanPredict’s Data Assimilation (DA-TT) and Observing System Evaluation (OSEval-TT) Task Teams. Heimbach currently serves as a member of the U.S. CLIVAR Ocean Uncertainty Quantification Working Group, as a co-chair of the GOOS-endorsed Deep Ocean Observing Strategy, and as a member of the U.S. National Committee for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
