OP’24 Symposium paper published in BAMS

The conference paper of “OceanPredict’24 Symposium: Advancing Ocean Prediction Science for Societal Benefit” has now been published in BAMS (Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society) vol. 102, no 12, and is available online at
The OceanPredict’24 symposium invited ocean modeling and prediction scientists from physics, sea ice, and biogeochemistry; observation specialists; industry representatives; service providers; and users of ocean data and products from across the international operational oceanography community to engage in science sessions and discussions to explore and define the future direction of ocean prediction.
This publication represents a major scientific milestone, consolidating the key priorities and recommendations emerging from the OP’24 symposium. These outcomes provided a strong scientific foundation that directly shaped the international mobilization “Call for Action to advance ocean prediction”, launched at the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, highlighting critical needs in ocean observations, modelling, data assimilation, and digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twins of the Ocean, to strengthen ocean prediction capabilities for societal benefit. This convergence of science, policy, and collective action through the value chain demonstrates the readiness of the international ocean community to co-design user-oriented, globally accessible, and operational ocean prediction solutions, reflecting a shared commitment to reinforcing ocean observing systems and prediction capacities to deliver tangible societal benefits.
